Now for the weather for the next couple of days, Sana, Hows it looking?

The weather presenter is standing in front of a blue-screen with the weather VT playing.

SANA HUFTY

it's looking like a wet start of the day for most of us tomorrow James and as we go through the next few days, we're going to be looking at some mixed showers for all of Essex with the temperatures dropping and the winds getting stronger. That takes us up to Thursday.

Forecast for Tuesday is shown.
SANA

So tomorrow it's going to be a dry start to the day with some mild temperatures creeping in. We will have some light wind blowing in a north-east direction. So the temperatures will be about 8 or 9 degree's with a top temperature tomorrow of about 10 degrees, staying cloudy over night.

Forecast for Wednesday is shown.

SANA

So moving into Tuesday, we start the day with some heavy showers which will persist for most of the morning and the wind will be a lot stronger. The rain will be migrating east leaving us dry at mid-afternoon. Temperatures will be slightly lower at around 7 degrees. Coming into the evening, the clouds will go away, leaving a cold night ahead, with temperatures at around 2 degrees.

Southend Football Club's Home tie against Hull in the 4th round of this year’s FA CUP has not been chosen to fill one of the 5 television slots for 4th round matches. In doing so they have missed out on what would have been a very welcome 144,000 pounds, however the club is still eligible for a 90 thousand pound prize from the FA Prize fund for the winning teams. The match was one of 16 matches competing for the 5 slots. It is however not all doom and gloom as the Blues have already picked up 112,500 pounds for making it to the 4th round of the competition. Kick off for the match is at 3 o'clock on the 25th of January.

Set Design - Bluescreen [1]

For the set design, we wanted something that looked professional and that matched the theme with our logo. We considered using one of the logo's that I originally used however we decided to use the one a different one on my USB stick, that is a virtual set. This one looks a lot better and very proffessional.

This way, the background looks professional and it matches with our colour scheme. The small TV's in the background are also animated. We tested this look out and it worked well. Below is James positioned on the left of the bluescreen screen  so that he appears next to the 'tv' and the third image shows someone testing the old SEN logo. The news background looks a lot better. We are going to put the SEN logo on the TV.

For the presenting, when James is standing up, we decided to use a real TV then. We thought that it would look good with James standing up. It also shows some of the team working behind him. We had a bit of difficultly with the light reflecting in the window, however we managed to block the lights reflecting. On the TV, we'll be having the SEN logo. (The logo comes out well on the TV however the photo doesn't show it.)

Pre-Credits Sequences - A Working Life

Establishes the tone, genre and subject of the film. For example, James Bond, Skyfall when Bond is introduced on a mission before showing the Adele sequence.

Protagonist - Main character (hero), audience's main focus - What do they want/need?
Antagonist - Generally negative, not the main focus - What do they want/need?
Pivotal Character(s) - Will be helping either the protagonist or antagonist - How do they keep the protagonist and antagonist engaged in conflict?

Dialogue - Not always needed (actions can replace)
Intentions - Motivation
Subtext - The meaning of the context, what's going on under the surface
Context - What's going on around it, what happens before and after? When and where is it happening?

A Working Day with Dialogue - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0Mi2vFkLL0pek5yRjNuTWxkX1k/edit?usp=sharing
A Working Day without Dialogue - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0Mi2vFkLL0pdzBIbEVid0YyRFk/edit?usp=sharing

Comment from Sana on the dialogue version:
"They have set the scene and I can sense a serious tone to this pre-credit scene. it is punchy and contains all the elements required to produce an exciting script for a movie. He has not outlined the protagonist much or the antagonist however, I can see a slight appear of those characters. I feel as if Sam is the protagonist because of his dizzy behaviour and as he seems slightly naive. The atmosphere goes from serious to funny. It is very surprising towards the titles because it was not excepted. In this case it does establish the subject, however it does it very vaguely. In conclusion, this piece of pre-credit sequence is well developed, seems that you have thought about this well and set the script in order of event so that it makes sense. It was very engaging however do try to be more obvious in some parts because it can be slightly vague. Well done! :)"

I think that Sana was accurate with her comments and I think that they were fair. She picked up on the random singing and dancing element of musicals. She said that some bits were a big vague and I agree as I don't really have a plan for upcoming events.

Weather VT

In our group, I made the weather VT. I consulted with the rest of the group about how it should look and the pacing e.t.c The main problem was getting a good looking and high quality background without a presenter. We contacted BBC weather presenter Carol Kirkwood on Twitter, who directed us to the Met Office.

The clips that they provided us were good however they didn't seem quite right. Whilst watching the end of the BBC news, I saw that they showed the London weather without a presenter, instead just doing a voice over. This was good for us, so we recorded it over two days and decided to use that. To start with, I thought a minimal summary of the next few days would be good. I edited the 'next few days' box on Photoshop and put that in. I also put in a banner at the top, however, after consulting with my group, we decided that it looked better without it.

I then deleted the top bit and enlarged the news box. We used a high-quality photo and positioned the forecast box on the right for our presenter to stand on the left. After watching news videos, it is very common that the weather presenters stand on the left.

We also kept the convention of having the date in the corner. The photo's above show the time, however that was the broadcast time, so I wouldn't add it into the VT. Some weather reports say the time of the weather, or time of day (i.e. evening) however we included this in the script rather than on the screen to make it more accurate for the audience.

The top image show's the date graphic full size. I then used a cut-out tool to scale to only show the corner. This also has an outline, which makes it look better. To conclude the video, we listed the link of the 'South Essex News' website and also the Met Office one. Again, this is following the conventions. This graphic was done on Photoshop, CS6.

We then rendered the video, and got this (see below) as the final result. I am talking over the clip to see that the script dialogue matches the visuals, for the pacing and details. For the main VT, we will have a presenter reading off of something. The script is below it.

Email Conversations - Canvey Sea Wall VT Research

As I live on Canvey, I know some of the councillors on the island. I knew one in particular as I had met him before on several occasions. Ray Howard is a Canvey councillor and has been managing the flood defences and has been linked with the Environment Agency for years. I had his email address and emailed him to ask if he would mind being interviewed for our VT and he kindly accepted. James and myself then met him at the sea wall in which we filmed him for about 15 minutes. Below are the email conversations. If Ray was unavailable, I would have contacted another member of the council or the Environment Agency, if not both.

Story Ideas - A Working Life

Actor: Harrison Ford
Location: Train Station
Genre: Musical

Title: A Working Life

Poster Idea: A murky train station setting with Harrison Ford leaning against a post, with a bag in his hand. He is brighter than the general area. 'A Working Life' is printed at the top, with 'Life is what you make it' at the bottom. The poster has a retro feel about it.

Logline: Office worker Sam Daniels refuses to let the gloomy city life get to him in this exhilarating musical. Singing, dancing and prancing Sam (Harrison Ford) is always in the chirpy mood, ready to lighten up people's days.

Description of Character: Sam Daniels is a 70 year old male who is an office working in London. Commuting daily from Upminster to Fenchurch Street by train, Sam always arrives early at work and is consistently in a good mood. Sam frequently likes to sing and dance and likes to see other people happy. He lives on his own in a flat and is happy.

Script Extract:
EXT. UPMINSTER TRAIN STATION

SAM is sitting down on his own. It is a dark and cloudy morning. A BUSINESS WOMEN comes and sits next to him, reading a newspaper.

SAM
Cold day isn't it?

The business women glances up and smiles before going back to her paper.

SAM
You know, they say it's supposed to get warmer soon. Maybe higher than 20 degrees.

The business women doesn't respond.

SAM
I watched Grease last night. Me any my girlfriend. You've just gotta love that film; so cheery and uplifting.

The business women looks up, annoyed.

BUSINESS WOMEN
Would you excuse me.

She walks off. Sam follows her, leaving his bag behind.

SAM
Summer loving' had me a blast. Summer lovin', happened so fast.I've met a girl, crazy for me.

Sam's train arrives at the platform.

BUSINESS WOMEN
I've got a boy, cute as can be. Summer days, drifting' away, to uh-oh those summer nights.

Sam pauses and the business women walks off. He gets on the train.

FADE TO BLACK.

EXT. FENCHURCH STREET

Sam gets off the train. He walks out of the station as a business mans walks into him, covering Sam's suit in coffee. He is busy and on the phone. Sam turns around, waiting an apology.

BUSINESS MAN
I'm so sorry.

They both pause as they recognise each other. It is Sam's previous boss.

SAM
Greg?

BUSINESS MAN
I'm so sorry, but I've got to go.

The business man starts to walk off.

SAM
I was cheated by you and I think you know when.

The man pauses. Sam starts to sing out loud.

SAM
So I made up my mind, it must come to an end.

People are starting to stop and look. They see the business man standing with his empty cup, and with Sam covered.

Sam
Look at me now, will I ever learn, I don't know how.

Sam becomes more dramatic and starts to dance, singing louder.

SAM
But I suddenly loose control, there's a fire within my soul.

The people start to join in.

SAM
Just one look and I can hear a bell ring. One more look and I forget everything.

BUSINESS MAN
Woah-oh.

SAM
Mamma Mia, here I go again.

Sam walks towards him.

SAM
My my, how can I resist you.
